When I feel good about myself it is usually because I am holding myself to higher standards than what others are expecting. This is not to say that you should take the expectations of others and go above and beyond them, because this will not be ultimately fulfilling. Instead, set your own goals for yourself and then ask, “what standards of success would others set for themselves, and how much more am I capable of?” You will be surprised at how often the two answers are substantially different.
This exercise is a great way to build self confidence. Even if you don’t reach the high goals that you set for yourself, you have usually achieved some modicum of success based on the standards of others, which can be a small consolation that can help inspire you to continue working towards the standards that you have set. On the other hand, if you do achieve your original goal, there is a new level of satisfaction that comes with it. You didn’t settle for what most people would be happy for. You achieved something rare. Something that you thought you could do better. It is a great feeling.
What are you working on right now? What sort of standards are you holding yourself to? Are you capable of doing it better? Of over achieving? I think you are.
